FAQ - My Ego

What is it to be the Ego in my head?!

Why does my Ego panic at times?

Why does my Ego exists?
My Ego never rests; it is always on duty.
Its purpose is to protect me, and it does so 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
It is both restless and relentless.
My Ego is the little voice in my head. It has an opinion about everything and anything, with the sole purpose of identifying risks and issues to ensure I avoid them.
My Ego scans everything I experience and, in 100% of cases, finds threats to avoid. It is delighted when it does, as it fulfills its life purpose of keeping me safe.
Although its intentions come from a place of care, my Ego is far from realizing that its constant warnings cause more stress than help.
However, when I am able to turn all its love back toward myself, my Ego becomes a powerful ally with many qualities I can leverage for my benefit—starting with its immense willpower.
There are two main cases where my Ego triggers panic:
1. When I attempt to ignore it.
When I behave this way, my Ego does not fade away. Instead, it intensifies its warnings to ensure I do not overlook the perceived dangers it is trying to protect me from.
Ignoring these warnings is simply not an option for my Ego. It interprets this as me standing against its fundamental role of safeguarding me—something it cannot accept.
For my Ego, being ignored is as unbearable as watching the person it cares for most about to cross a road in front of an oncoming truck and having its warning go unheard. It is simply intolerable.
2. When my Ego is unable to shield me.
This typically happens when an issue arises that I either failed to anticipate or feel I lack the knowledge to handle effectively.
For my Ego, this is the worst-case scenario. Its core purpose is to ensure nothing bad happens to me. If it falls short, it views this as a failure to provide the complete protection it believes I deserve.
At this point, my Ego generates an overwhelming flood of catastrophic scenarios stemming from the unexpected situation I am experiencing. It simply cannot cope with the idea of not protecting me effectively.
To stop the panic, I need to take a moment to calm my Ego.
I can acknowledge its presence and assure it that I am not ignoring it. Alternatively, I can reassure it that we will find a way out together and that it has not failed me.
Once the pressure eases, I can manage the moment and revisit the event later, when I have time to reflect.
At that stage, I can engage in dialogue with my Ego to figure out together how to prevent similar situations in the future.
My Ego is the little voice in my head that has brought humanity to where we are today. It is linked to the most ancient part of our brain—the part our ancestors used to understand and avoid danger. Without it, we would be part of the extinct species.
This is the part of the brain that ensured survival and brought us so far. That is why it is so focused on protecting us: it has been fulfilling this role since the very beginning of humankind.
Accordingly, our Ego interacts with several key areas of the brain:
1. The Prefrontal Cortex: This region regulates impulsive behavior and aligns with the Ego’s role in assessing risks and ensuring self-preservation.
2. The Amygdala: The Ego’s function of identifying threats and triggering protective responses is closely tied to the amygdala’s role in detecting danger and initiating fight-or-flight reactions.
3. The Hippocampus: The Ego’s reliance on past experiences to predict and avoid potential dangers is connected to the hippocampus’s role in linking memories to present situations.
