FAQ
LIVING IN THE PRESENT
FAQ - Living in the present
What does it concretely mean to be present?
Where is my Ego when I am present?
Why can't I be polluted and present?
Being present means I am fully here. That I am part of what is happening to me in the moment, without projecting my own thoughts into it.
I am curious about the surroundings, and I am also aware how my body is and what emotions I have. I am going with the flow and actively part of what is happening.
To make a parallel, I am like a UN observer: I observe, I report, I interact - but I am neither hurt nor here to judge what is right or wrong. I simply am, and enjoying being here and now.
When I am present, my Ego joins me in the moment.
Since my Ego never stops, I need to make it part of being present—otherwise, it will not work. It cannot be ignored: the more I push it away, the more it will step up to protect me.
Still, when I am present, my Ego cannot imagine what might happen next or replay past events in my mind. As a result, the only option left is for my Ego and me to work together.
I can then use its strengths to stay grounded: focus, resilience, courage, and more.
As my Ego contributes, it will feel valuable and appreciated—a rewarding place for it to be.
My Ego may not be perfect, but it is committed, tries hard, never gives up, and is always there for me.
When we act as a team, it becomes an incredible asset that I can rely on to stay anchored in the present.
When I am polluted, I am not living in the moment. I am disconnected from reality and lost in my own head. I am rethinking the past or projecting into the future, and by definition, this disconnects me from what is real.
In contrast, when I am present, I am fully here and now. I am not imagining scenarios or relying on my imagination—everything I experience is real.
Therefore, polluting myself and being present are fundamentally incompatible.
Why is it so difficult to remain present?
When we first begin practicing being present, it is undeniably challenging. Our minds are accustomed to freedom, constantly jumping from one topic to the next without pause or rest. It takes significant willpower to focus our attention and concentrate.
Modern life encourages this restless behavior. We are bombarded with information and use apps designed to keep our attention spans fleeting—just a few seconds before the next topic demands our focus. Although counterintuitive, as we instinctively know that being present is better for us, jumping between topics feels easier and more natural. Yet this approach fills our days without fulfilling us. Truly living our lives—being present in our experiences—is what brings fulfillment.
It is difficult to be present because we have lost the habit in our modern lives. Additionally, when I am present, my Ego works alongside me but is not in charge. However, if I remain in my head, my Ego takes control. This adds another layer of difficulty to the practice: my Ego will do everything it can to distract me and pull me back into old habits, where it holds power.
As I break this pattern, being present becomes easier and more natural. Interestingly, what I used to enjoy will start to feel annoying. I will want to focus and dive deeper rather than skim across many insignificant topics. I will prefer to savor the moments I am living instead of staring down at my phone.
Develop the discipline to be present, and there will be no turning back!
